Painting is one of the most popular DIY home improvement projects in South Africa – it’s relatively affordable, doesn’t require specialist tools, and can transform the look of a room. But if you’ve ever ended up with uneven coverage, paint that starts peeling after a few months, or a result that just doesn’t look as clean as you expected, the cause is almost always one of a handful of very common mistakes. Here’s what they are, and how to avoid them.

Skipping Surface Preparation
This is the number one cause of paint failure, and it’s completely avoidable. Before any paint goes on, the surface needs to be clean, dry, and sound. That means washing off dust, grease, and mould (particularly relevant in KZN’s humid conditions), sanding any rough areas or old paint that’s starting to lift, filling cracks and holes properly, and allowing everything to dry completely. Paint applied over a surface that hasn’t been properly prepared won’t bond correctly – it will look acceptable initially and then peel or crack within months.
Using the Wrong Type of Paint
South African paint ranges are clearly differentiated by application type, but many homeowners pick a tin based on colour without checking the formulation. Bathrooms and kitchens need moisture-resistant paint – standard interior PVA in a bathroom will blister and mould within a season in KZN’s humidity. Exterior walls need weatherproof coatings that flex with temperature changes and resist UV. High-traffic areas like corridors and children’s rooms benefit from harder, more washable finishes. Using the wrong product in the wrong environment shortens the life of your paint job significantly. Painting is also one of the most cost-effective small home upgrades you can make – but only when it’s done properly.
Skipping Primer
Primer is frequently omitted as a cost or time-saving measure, and it consistently undermines the result. Primer creates a uniform surface for paint to adhere to. It’s essential when painting over a darker colour (without it, you’ll need far more coats of the new colour), when working on new plaster (which is highly alkaline and will affect paint adhesion without a stabilising primer), and when covering stains or water marks. Skipping primer doesn’t save money – it costs you in extra coats and a shorter-lasting finish.
Rushing Coats
Every paint manufacturer specifies a recoat time for a reason. Applying a second coat before the first has properly dried causes the fresh coat to pull at the surface beneath, resulting in streaking, bubbling, and uneven texture. In KZN’s humid summer months, drying times can be longer than the tin suggests. Be patient – most quality interior paints need at least two to four hours between coats, and some exterior products need overnight drying.
Using Low-Quality Tools
Cheap brushes shed bristles, hold inconsistent amounts of paint, and leave marks. Budget rollers don’t hold enough paint for even application and can leave a texture that looks obviously different from a quality roller. The cost difference between acceptable and poor-quality brushes and rollers is modest, but the difference in result is visible. If you’re investing in decent paint, use decent application tools.
Ignoring Weather Conditions
This applies particularly to exterior painting in KZN. Do not paint in direct harsh sunlight – the paint dries too quickly, compromising adhesion and leaving brush marks. Don’t paint when rain is forecast within 24 hours of completion. Don’t paint when temperatures are very high or humidity is extreme. Early morning, after the dew has cleared, is typically the best time for exterior painting in KZN’s warmer months.
When It’s Worth Hiring a Professional
For a small room you’re confident in, DIY painting can be a reasonable choice if you prepare properly. For exterior walls, large open-plan spaces, ceilings, or anything requiring a particularly clean finish, the result of a professional job is usually meaningfully better – and it will last longer. Professional painters also handle the prep work that most DIY projects skip or rush through.
